Ian's Completely Unqualified Tyre Psychology Part 1 - Matt's New Tyres

Did you know that I can make you a better or a worse, with just one sentence... Read on!

Let's be very, very, brutally honest here... most of us can't 'feel' our tyres.
We think we can... but most of us will rarely ever have that magic feel that racers seem to have.

What we think is 'feel' is more likely our brain filling in the gaps based on a mix of psychology, imagination, marketing information and the weather.

Yes, we can feel when the tyres are gripping, that's normal.
We can also feel when the tyres aren't gripping because we're now sliding down the road, and boy can we feel that road!

When trust in tyres is based on what the brain tells us, it can be manipulated make you ride like a god or ride with fear and trepidation for an inevitable crash

A recent example..... our fitter Matt had new tyres on his bike, and on the very next day he reported that they were SO MUCH BETTER than the previous ones.

Some factors here...

New tyres = they automatically feel better
Premium brand =they automatically feel better
On an endorphin high following a happy purchase = they automatically feel better

He feels AMAZING! But we can change this with one sentence … 'You chose THOSE tyres Matt... Doug crashed on those tyres last week and he was only doing 50 and it was barely damp.'

WAIT? WHAT? THESE CAN CRASH IN DAMP WEATHER?

I've just wrecked your tyres. You're welcome.
I wouldn't do that to Matt though, we can help boost trust and confidence and ability, but that's for the next blog.
