A suitable everyday scooter tyre should provide a sensible balance between predictable handling, comfort, wet-road capability and durability.

If your scooter is used throughout the year, consider how the tyre is intended to perform in cooler temperatures and wet weather. No tyre removes the need to adjust your speed and riding style to the road and weather conditions.

Tyres for maxi-scooters

Maxi-scooters are generally larger, heavier and more powerful than traditional urban scooters. They may be used for longer journeys, carrying a passenger or luggage, and travelling on motorways and faster roads.

When choosing maxi-scooter tyres, it is particularly important to check the required load index and speed rating as well as the physical size. Do not assume that two tyres with matching dimensions are automatically interchangeable, as their construction and ratings may differ.

Classic and vintage scooter tyres

Classic scooters can use traditional tyre sizes and may require an inner tube depending on the wheel and tyre construction. Some tyres offer a period-style tread pattern, while others combine a more traditional appearance with modern tyre technology.

Before ordering for a classic scooter, check the tyre size carefully and establish whether the wheel requires a tube. The existing tyre can provide useful information, but the scooter handbook and approved fitment information should also be consulted.

How to choose the right scooter tyres

Check the complete tyre size

The tyre size is normally printed on its sidewall. A common metric marking might look like 120/70-12. In this example, 120 identifies the nominal tyre width in millimetres, 70 is the aspect ratio and 12 is the wheel diameter in inches.

Some classic and smaller scooter tyres use an inch-based size such as 3.50-10. Do not convert between different sizing systems without checking that the alternative size is approved and suitable for the scooter and wheel.

Check whether it is a front or rear tyre

Some scooter tyres are designed specifically for the front or rear wheel, while others may be suitable for either position when fitted according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Check the product fitment and the directional arrow on the tyre before installation.

Check the load and speed ratings

The load index shows the maximum load a tyre is designed to carry under specified conditions, while the speed symbol relates to its approved speed capability. Replacement tyres must meet the requirements of the scooter, particularly on larger machines used with a passenger or luggage.

Confirm whether an inner tube is needed

Scooter tyres may be marked TL for tubeless or TT for tube type. However, the wheel design must also be considered. A tubeless-marked tyre may still require a suitable inner tube when installed on certain tube-type or split rims.

When should scooter tyres be replaced?

Scooter tyres should be inspected regularly for tread wear, cuts, cracking, embedded objects, bulges, uneven wear and other damage. Tyre pressures should also be checked when the tyres are cold, using the scooter manufacturer’s recommended figures.

The UK legal minimum tread depth for most motorcycles and scooters over 50cc is generally 1mm across three-quarters of the tread width, with visible tread on the remaining quarter. Mopeds below 50cc must have a visible tread pattern. However, waiting until a tyre reaches the legal limit may not be appropriate in every situation, particularly where its condition or performance has deteriorated.

What tyre pressures should I use on my scooter?
